What Everyone Should Know about Talent Management

Commitment to talent cannot be static -- it’s way more than just a single factor or a process focus. Instead, leaders must fully commit to developing talent by providing the best environment, the best people, and the best tools if they want to ensure positive, sustained results. Furthermore, talent development requires a culture that is open, engaging, and flexible as everyone brings value and a new perspective to successes.

It is important to remember that while consistency is critical, understanding and providing versatility that provides an opportunity to leverage the differences of a diverse population will deliver stronger culture, commitment, and, most likely, strong top and bottom line results.

Finding the right talent often requires more work than we anticipate and may even feel like a wild adventure sometimes. For one thing, there are many preconceptions and assumptions around talent management, from acquisition to review, to development and to, when required, exit.

Keep in mind that the best talent ambassadors are not only current employees within the organization, but also those who have left the organization. Leaders must be able to recognize those situations when they should offer an employee “the opportunity to flourish elsewhere.” As well, it is imperative that this is done in a compliant and compassionate manner.

Compliance is obvious, so why with compassion? Well mainly because it is smart business. Your employees will always be evaluating your approach, which could ultimately impact how they choose to manage their own careers. Always remember, former employees can impact your brand, so be very aware that even though the “why” may be confidential, the “how” may not be, even with severance agreements. So, make the investment in providing support at the level that makes sense with exiting employees to help drive the best outcome for everyone. It’s also a cohesive approach to brand awareness that is fluid and ever-changing to ensure the best outcome for customers and employees alike.

Talent comes full circle, especially in today’s market, so consistency with employees coming and leaving the organization will make a difference in your company’s culture, brand, and sustained success. For success, talent management is a commitment that does not end.
